Where are these details today?

After a recent trip to my fiance's College, I took this image. This is one of the "gargoyles" (for lack of a better term) that is carved on the cornice of the Freshman's dorm. You just don't find little details like this today. Not necessarily gargoyles per-say, but the thought that it takes to produce little details. I am not opposed to the general principles of Modern Architecture, but what I do miss are the details like this and others. In my view architects have forgotten what a real joy it is to see little gems like this. Most times it seems that all they care about are the ephemeral aspects that give a space a certain feel that they have come to like. This is not to say that all Modern Architecture is lacking in thought and detail, there just seems to be a lack of thought beyond Form, Space, & Order.
