Where are these details today?

After a recent trip to my fiance's College, I took this image. This is one of the "gargoyles" (for lack of a better term) that is carved on the cornice of the Freshman's dorm. You just don't find little details like this today. Not necessarily gargoyles per-say, but the thought that it takes to produce little details. I am not opposed to the general principles of Modern Architecture, but what I do miss are the details like this and others. In my view architects have forgotten what a real joy it is to see little gems like this. Most times it seems that all they care about are the ephemeral aspects that give a space a certain feel that they have come to like. This is not to say that all Modern Architecture is lacking in thought and detail, there just seems to be a lack of thought beyond Form, Space, & Order.

New York Trip

These are some images from a trip that I took to NYC to research an art piece for my final studio project last semiester. This was my first trip to New York City, and I tried to capture as many images as I could. The trip was comprised of a visit to mid-town, and a visit to the MoMA, the American Museum of Folk Art, and The Soloman R. Guggenhiem Museum. I walked to each. Some of the photos included are of The Lever House, by Architects Skidmore, Owings, and Meril (SOM), and the Segrums Tower, by Architect Mies Van Der Rowe,(with Philip Johnson, consulting). The art peice I was researching was Donald Judd's Untitled (Stacks '67). Various other exibits are shown as well.

Hello World

It great to be here.
A little background.

Currently I am a B. Arch. candidate at a small college in Boston. I am in the middle of my second year here and I am really excited to finally be doing what I have always dreamed of. This is a career change for me. Prior to this I was a certified professional welder for seven years, and I am a sixth generation carpenter and shipbuilder. I am not originally from Boston, I have migrated to the area for school from New Mexico.

The focus of this blog will be goings on in school, work, and the like. I will be posting photos of trips and things that interest me architecturally speaking. I am going to try to post images and descriptions of school projects and analysis of design. Post will most likely be on a weekly basis, but check back often I could actually find the time to post more frequently.

So lets sit back and enjoy the ride. All comments are welcome. I will try to review and respond to comments in a timely fashion.

Best,

Archiphile
